Life on the planet's most crowded island

A two-hour boatride off the coast of Colombiais an island, the mostdensely-populated island on earth.

(chattering)Santa Cruz del Islote consistsof more than 1,200 peopleliving on land the sizeof two soccer fields,making it four timesas dense as Manhattan.On the island is a schoolthat runs up to the 10th grade,two shops, and one restaurant.

There is no steady supply of waterand a sole generator that onlyruns for five hours per day.There are no police, but thereisn't much need for them,as everyone on theisland knows each other.(children chattering)150 years ago, the islandwas primarily uninhabitedand was sometimes used by local fishermenas a place to rest andtake shelter during storms.

Gradually, some fishermen cameto build their homes here.These were the grandparentsand great-grandparentsof the current generation of residents.Despite the close living quarters,inhabitants on the islandsay they wouldn't give uptheir peaceful existence for anything,not even a little more room.(chattering)(peaceful jingling)
